We were invited to Zach and Sarah's wedding in their home town of Mayville, WI which is about 60 miles North of Milwaukee. We drove about three hours in decent weather. Jake and Cat drove up separately as me and Kathryn stayed the night for some hiking on Sunday.
The wedding was very nice (and short!). We saw Missy, Gary, Lani, Rachel and Morgan at the wedding and had a chance to visit afterwards. Unfortunately, Missy, Gary and Lani were not going to the reception.
We headed from Mayville up to Fond Du Lac (about 40 mins North) for the reception. Reception was nice. They had arranged seating and we sat with Jake, Cat and Dave's sister and her husband. Masks were used unless you were seated at your table. Except for Zach's large family (brother's Josh, Joey, Ben, Riley and Kyle and his parent's Amy and Dave) the only other relation we knew were Rachel, her daughter Morgan and Morgan's daughter. The food was very good and it was a nice evening.
We headed back to our hotel (Hotel Retlaw) in Fond Du Lac and Jake and Cat went back to Saint Charles to take care of Cutter.
The day was overcast and cool (nice for hiking).
Horicon marsh is 33,0000 acres and one of the largest fresh water marshes in the U.S. (I grew up in WI and never knew!). There are a number of trails and a drive loop.
So, we drove around the loop stopping at turn outs along the way. Then, we parked at the trail head and did two short hikes, Red Fox Trail and Egret Trail.
The marsh is very cool and super easy hiking (flat). It is a major bird migration path and we were hoping to see a lot of birds but, did not see too many.
The trees, as you can see from the pictures, were already pretty bare. I think we missed spectacular fall colors by a couple of weeks. But, still, a fantastic day hiking in a great
nature area with no crowds.
We headed back on the three hour drive back to Saint Charles in the early afternoon. We had both a Packer game (played terrible) and a Bears game (won) recorded and waiting for us when we got back!
Not exactly grand travel but, hey, it's 2020.
Be Safe!
